3 Important Reasons To Visit The Gynecologist

There are several important reasons why you should visit your gynecologist. They can help with so many different things regarding women's health, because of their specialized training and expertise. This article is going to discuss 3 important reasons to visit the gynecologist.

Irregular Periods

If your periods are irregular, or they are not coming at all, then it is important that you visit your gynecologist to see what may be wrong. They will begin the process of running several different tests on you to try and figure out why your period is this way. It could be anything from stress, to amenorrhea, to Polycystic Ovary Symptom (PCOS), or even ovarian cancer. Since the loss or irregularity of your period is something that is not at all normal, it is important that you tell your gynecologist exactly what you have been experiencing and how long it has been going on. They will likely run further tests on you if necessary, and will most likely put you on a birth control regimen to help get your periods to start up again.

Annual Pelvic Exam

Another important reason to visit your gynecologist is for your annual pelvic exam. During this exam your gynecologist is going to check the overall health of your vagina, ovaries, etc. You will likely receive a pap smear to check and make sure that you don't have cancer or any sexually transmitted diseases. This is also a good time to discuss any concerns or issues that you may be having, such as heavier than normal periods, increased discharge, swelling, or itching. They will be able to not only view your pelvic area to see what may be wrong, but they will also be able to discuss with you all of the potential methods for fixing, or at least further trying to figure out how to treat, this potential issue.

Birth Control

Your gynecologist is also going to be able to prescribe you birth control if you are sexually active, but are not wanting to get pregnant. They will discuss with you what all of your different birth control options are, such as pills, mini pills, IUD, and shots in the arm. They will also tell you the possible pros and cons of each form of birth control. This information is going to help you make the best decision possible when it comes to what form of birth control you should choose.
